Mountains and blisters: what actually helps

A blister is the skin's response to repeated friction, made worse by moisture. A cotton sock soaks up sweat and multiplies the friction.

The fix is a material that wicks moisture and a seamless toe that doesn't press. On long hikes a thin liner sock under a thicker one helps too.

Before a hike, test a new sock on a shorter route. Nothing is worse than discovering an uncomfortable seam halfway along a ridge.

And don't forget dry spare socks in your pack — the simplest prevention of all.
